My favorite passage taken from my newly purchased book entitled “POOR CHURCH FOR THE POOR”

“The only way to happiness is by immitating God, who gave His all that we might have everything in this world justly shared with one another. If one gives to the poor, he must keep in mind that it is not the poor that it is given to but to CHRIST. Therefore, we cannot afford to be blind and deaf to the One who gave us everything; the only way of expressing our gratitude to Him is by giving back through His poor our love and charity”

Thank you so much to the author of this book, my good and amazing friend, Rev. Fr. Jude Mirasol Garceniego, a good samaritan who focuses on helping the poor thru scholarship grants and religious formation as Good Stewards of God.

Per Pope Francis, “God shows the poor his first mercy. He wants a Church which is poor and for the poor. He further explains that love for the poor does not consist of a series of welfare projects for the benefit of the poor without a sense of identifying with their person. Loving them by appreciating who they are, their particular identity conditioned by their culture and experience of life, their goodness and in their practice of the faith. This will bring about authentic concern for them, eliminating their exploitation in the service of selfish ends”.

The book is an expression of genuine love by someone who had experienced the grim reality of poverty. To borrow the statement from the author, “The church, including its members, has the moral obligation to help the needy.” The author’s plea for social justice and the call to action from the faithful community brings the problem of poverty, which is a glaring issue but ignored most of the time, a paramount concern that requires urgent solution.

This book encourages us to be aware of the plight of our needy brothers and sisters and be active participants in the solution. As the author said, “Let this book serve as a gift to one’s self.” For me what he meant was to allow ourselves to find and encounter Christ among the poor. Finding Christ is the best gift we can give to ourselves.
