MESSAGE

The poor love the Church. The anecdote in this book of the poor old woman who saved 100 pesos to give to the Church for the time when a priest would come to bless her home shows how purely the poor love the Church. There is no hidden agenda in their love for God, their love for the Church.

There is no doubt, too, that the Church loves the poor. This book chronicles the many ways, the many documents, and the many actions that show her love for the poor. But there is still one way by which the Church must completely love the poor. The Church must be poor.

Jesus Christ beckons the Church, calls out to us to “sell what you possess and give to the poor” and to “follow me.” Pope Francis has called on us to open our hearts to the poor. He even has given us a special time, the Holy Year of Mercy, to reflect on the Father’s mercy and to be merciful like Him. It is His mercy that directs us to see the poor, to love and serve them. It is His mercy that prompts us to embrace poverty, a space in our hearts and lives that opens up to God’s love and providence.

Fr. Jude has scholarly and personally expounded on the “Poor Church for the Poor.” Indeed it reveals the poverty in our nation today. And he shows ways on how we can be the poor Church for the poor. May our study of the poor make us poor so we can truly follow Jesus.

 MESSAGE

            I write this message, as requested by the author, Fr. Jude M. Garceniego, coincidentally, this 3^rd day of December 2015, the feast day of St. Francis Xavier, the Patron Saint of Kabankalan Diocese, my first and former diocese.

I therefore ask St. Francis Xavier to bless with his prayers the book of Fr. Jude M. Garceniego, entitled: POOR CHURCH FOR THE POOR. In many instances the book resonates with the life and missionary travails of the Patron Saint of the Missions, who offered his life and his all for the then fledging Church of India-among the poorest of the poor.

In the example of St. Francis Xavier and endorsed by the author of this book, FAITH IN GOD, HUMILITY AND CHRISTIAN HEROISM are needed to establish the Church of the Poor precisely in the Hearts of the materially poor and of “those blessed, who are poor in spirit.”

I exhort everybody to read this book especially the priests working in the parishes and all BEC leaders.

Fr. Jude, congratulations! I ask the Good Lord, through the intercession of St. Francis Xavier to bless you and your priesthood.

MESSAGE

          Congratulations to Fr. Jude for writing the Poor Church for the Poor illustrating how the diocese of Kabankalan has seriously taken this challenge of option of the poor in its discussions and policies.

This is very much in tune with what Pope Francis is encouraging the church to take – to reach out to the existential peripheries so that the Church can be true to its mission of showing the face of compassion of God in the world today especially to those who are being left behind in the world’s relentless search for “progress.”

May this book fire in us the desire to be truly the Church of the Poor in the Philippines as we approach the 500th year of the coming of the faith in our shores.

Fr. Jude wrote in the preface of his book: “This very book that is in your hands has been my long awaited tribute to the poor like me….” In this book Fr. Jude showed his appreciation of the poor in his ministry with his systematic reflection on the love of the Church for the poor that he traced back to Jesus and the teachings of the Church. He personalized his study on the preferential option for the poor of Jesus and of the Church as he put it in the context of his own local church, the Diocese of Kabankalan.

When Fr. Jude wrote that he envisions “that this book will be translated … to the lives of those who are able to read it” he already began it.  I know that he lives this option for the poor as he continues to fill in the pages of the book of his priestly life. During his short stay in St. John Bosco Parish he was noted for his simplicity and his great concern for the poor, especially those in his diocese.

This book of Fr. Jude is truly a significant contribution to the Church in the Philippines, especially in the Diocese of Kabankalan, for the Year of the Poor 2014-2015 by way of documentation and contextualization of PCP II’s Preferential Option for the Poor. This book also contains an invitation for concrete pastoral action for the poor in his diocese (see page 149.) This book indeed mirrors the priestly heart of Fr. Jude: it is young and beating strongly for the poor.

Mio Carissimo Papa Francesco,

Saluti di pace e di speranza!

Mi permetta di presentarmi. Sono Rev. P. Jude Mirasol Garceniego, sacerdote della diocesi di Kabankalan, nella regione del Negros Occidental, Filippine . Sono nato il 9 dicembre 1984. Ho finito i miei cinque anni di formazione in Filosofia nel Seminario “Little Way College” sotto la supervisione della Diocesi di Kabankalan nell’anno 2006.  Ho frequentato i miei cinque anni di formazione in Teologia al Seminario Regionale St. Joseph nell’arcidiocesi di Jaro in Iloilo City e terminato nel 2011.

Attualmente,  mi trovo qui a Roma a studiare nell’Università Pontificia Salesiana (UPS), in Piazza dell ‘Ateneo Salesiano, sto frequentando un corso per conseguire la laurea in Comunicazione Sociale.

Per narrare brevemente alcuni importanti eventi della mia vita, sono stato ordinato come diacono, pochi giorni prima delle dimissioni inaspettate del Papa Emerito Benedetto XVI. Stavo conducendo un ritiro per studenti delle scuole superiori in una delle nostre scuole parrocchiali nella Diocesi di Kabankalan nel Negros Occidental, Filippine, quando ho appreso la notizia delle dimissioni di Papa Benedetto XVI. La mia domanda immediata allora era “Che cosa accadrà ora che il suo è stato lasciato libero?” Il mio Vescovo di appartenenza, Mons Patricio A. Buzon, SDB, DD scherzosamente ci ha detto, “La tua ordinazione ufficiale sarà rinviata perché non abbiamo un papa.”

I miei compagni sono stati preparati per l’ordinazione sacerdotale e io invece come diacono. Nonostante il posto vacante di pontifice, sono lieto di informarvi che sono stati ordinati sacerdoti  il 25 febbraio 2013, come da programma.

Vale la pena ricordare che, poco dopo la nostra ordinazione, 16 giorni per l’esattezza, un nuovo Papa, nella sua persona,  è stato eletto. Se la memoria non m’inganna, la sua elezione Beatissimo Padre è accaduto il 13 marzo 2013 alle 19:06 ora delle Filippine.

Il 27 agosto 2013, Festa di S. Monica, la grande madre di San Agostino, e 6 mesi dopo la sua elezione, sono stato ordinato sacerdote. Il 28 agosto 2013, festa di San Agostino, ha segnato la mia prima Messa nella parrocchia della mia città natale di Nostra Signora di Lourdes. Si tratta della stessa parrocchia dove sono stato battezzato da un Colombano missionario, padre  Donal Hogan, il 10 Febbraio 1985, che è un giorno prima la festa della Madonna di Lourdes. In tale Preghiera eucaristica, lei è già il Papa che ho citato. Questo è come si dice in Ilonggo. “Kag sa Aton Santo Papa nga si Francisco …”, tradotto in inglese come “e al nostro Papa Francesco …”.

 Mi sono reso conto che la tua vita ha influenzato notevolmente la mia vita di sacerdote. Le parole con cui hai parlato il 16 marzo 2013, che cito: “Come potrei amare una chiesa che è povera e per i poveri”. Hanno attecchito nel mio cuore. Questo è fondamentalmente il motivo per cui ho scritto questa lettera a lei.

Quando avete visitato le Filippine nel gennaio 2015, speravo di vederla da vicino, ma ho avuto la fortuna di prendere uno sguardo attraverso la mia macchina fotografica. Speravo in una rara opportunità di raccontare la storia nel libro che ho scritto e che è stato recentemente pubblicato. Questo è il mio tributo alla gente povera che serva come ispirazione nel rispondere alla chiamata di Dio al sacerdozio.

Il libro è un sottoprodotto della mia tesi nel mio studio post-laurea. Il titolo della mia tesi era: “l’opzione preferenziale di PCPII per i poveri della diocesi di Kabankalan:. Un’analisi” In questo anno dei Poveri  (2014-2015) e in preparazione per il 500 ° anniversario del cristianesimo nelle Filippine, trovo sia rilevante per pubblicare il mio libro, che ora porta il titolo: “Chiesa povera per i poveri.” Queste erano le stesse parole con cui lei ha parlato tre giorni dopo che, Beatissimo Padre, è stato eletto come un papa. E queste sono le stesse parole che hanno alimentato la mia ispirazione.

Spero di condividere con lei il mio entusiasmo consegnando personalmente  una copia per lei. Inoltre, vorrei chiedere il suo messaggio personale ai lettori, che intendo inserire nella prossima ristampa . E ‘per questo scopo che vorrei fare appello per un appuntamento personale con Lei, Santo Padre.

Vorrei esprimere la mia sincera gratitudine a lei il nostro amato Papa Francesco. Lei è vicino ai nostri cuori. Prego che sia possibile concedermi questo favore e consentire un piccolo spazio nel suo programma sempre molto occupato. Tuttavia, qualunque sia la sua decisione per quanto riguarda la mia richiesta, io pregherò sempre per lei.

Dio la benedica il PIÙ SANTO PADRE, PAPA FRANCESCO!
